During this six month, state-of-the-art course the participant will acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in the field of Treatment Planning (TP) for Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR). Distance online learning, which includes interactive group sessions, is combined with one-week of intensive face-to-face learning on the Haarlem campus. This week can also be taken as a stand-alone course (see below).
Interactive teaching sessions, focused on situations encountered in clinical practice, are an important component of the course. There are 3 modules:
In the first module the student performs four treatment planning exercises. In addition participants are also required to work on a detailed case study, which forms part of the course assessment. During the online group sessions participants present the results of their (treatment planning) tasks and each presentation is followed by a discussion period. The second module is a five-day hands-on course in November at the Haarlem campus. During this week the participants learn through lectures/interactive teaching and hands-on sessions where participants carry out planning exercises for different tumour sites and explore the potential of the various treatment planning systems for IMRT, VMAT and SABR. In the third module participants complete their case study and perform one complex treatment planning case. Microsoft Skype for Business is used for the online sessions.
The course is suitable for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher who have some experience of IMRT treatment planning and who want to expand their knowledge and skills. Potential participants include radiation therapy technologists (RTTs), medical physicists and radiation oncologists, including those in training, and medical engineers working in RT departments.
Organizers and teachers
The course is organised by the Inholland University of Applied Sciences and the Inholland University Medical Technology research group. The course directors are Emmy Lamers and Jelle Scheurleer. The teaching faculty consists of radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapy technologists from various centres in The Netherlands.
