VMAT Treatment Planning Hands-on course
During this intensive one-week course the participant will acquire state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the field of Treatment Planning (TP) for Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR). Although this course is the core module of the comprehensive six-month online VMAT TP course, it can be undertaken separately. It is given in collaboration with companies who market the treatment planning systems used during the course. The aim is an intensive course with an optimum interaction between students and teachers. For this reason, the number of participants is restricted.
Interactive teaching sessions, focused on scenarios relevant to daily clinical practice, are an important aspect of the course. In the mornings a variety of experts from renowned radiotherapy departments will share their experience of treatment planning for IMRT, VMAT and SABR. These morning sessions provide the background for afternoon hands-on “treatment planning labs”. There are 4 of these hands-on sessions, delivered in collaboration with the commercial vendors for the different planning systems. Guided by experienced clinical users and vendor experts, participants will create treatment plans for different tumour sites and explore the potential of the planning systems for IMRT, VMAT and SABR. There will be opportunities for participants to present and discuss their treatment plans and experiences with the various systems and to justify their choices made the following morning.
The course is primarily aimed at those with a bachelor’s degree or higher who have some experience of IMRT treatment planning and want to expand their knowledge and skills. Potential participants include radiation therapy technologists (RTTs), medical physicists and radiation oncologists, including those in training, and medical engineers working in RT departments. The course may also be of interest to employees of RT product vendors.
Organizers and teachers
The course is organised by the Inholland University of Applied Sciences and the Inholland University Medical Technology research group. The course directors are Emmy Lamers and Jelle Scheurleer. The teaching faculty consists of radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapy technologists from various centres in The Netherlands. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the measures to combat the pandemie this course will not be held in fall 2020. At the moment it’s unsure when we can run this course again. We did redesign our online course to both serve experience and novel treatment planners.
